Stan Holaway
February 20, 1950 - May 28, 2006

On Saturday, April 2, 2005, after two severe headaches earlier in the week and a suspected sinus infection, a CT scan in Gadsden reveled a "mass" in my father's right temporal lobe. Four days later, on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at UAB hospital, 80-90% of a small tumor was removed. It was classified as a Glioblastoma Multiforme, the most aggressive and deadly of all brain tumors. His initial prognosis was 6 to 12 months.

After 6 weeks of radiation, monthly chemotherapy, and nine months of daily injections for a clinical trial, his tumor was "stable", showing no growth or change, until an MRI in February 2006 revealed that not only was the original tumor growing, but it had now spread into two other areas of his brain. After one more attempt with a clinical trial, on April 17, 2006 his doctors determined the cancer was still growing and that there was nothing else they could do for him. They gave him one to two months to live and we began hospice at that time.

On Sunday morning, May 28, 2006, at exactly 8:30 am, he took his last breath. My mother and I were right beside him and I was holding his hand. Luckily, he had virtually no pain during his first year, and very little during his last weeks, for which we are very grateful. He was dearly loved by all his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Please feel free to sign his guestbook and leave any messages, memories, or condolences.
